A trip to Pulau Aman

Journal Entry 221

Hello ! I am back :).

Sorry for the long break. Had been really busy here and there.

Well, to keep this entry short, I took Matt out for a boat ride and a trip to Pulau Aman a few weeks back with hubby's colleagues. It was a half day tour and since Matt had not been on a boat before, we decided to let him try.

So, where is this place ? Basically, it is a small island in Penang - located across the mainland and is known as the 'Island of Peace'. It is a typical Malay fishing village & is well known for it's fresh seafood like big prawns and mantis prawn & has the oldest 'Sukun' tree or breadfruit (a family of cempedak/nangka)

On the boat

We started our journey at 9am as we need to travel to Tambun for the boat ride. Reached the Batu Kawan jetty around 9.30am and took a short 10 mins boat ride before we arrived at the small island. It is a quaint and quiet village and there were no fences around the houses. Locals were friendly and were seen cycling n running around while some were repairing their fishing nets.

Indeed, one of the major attractions there is to eat 'Mee Udang' (Prawn Noodles) located at the restaurant at the village boat jetty (Restaurant Terapung). I was told that the fresh prawns run out fast but we were lucky as we arrived early. Anyway, as we were on the way to the place, a few fishing boats arrived with their morning catch. Managed to show Matt some live oysters & horseshoe crab - he got a bit excited when it moved :):)

Reached the restaurant  & each of us ordered a plate of mee udang. Hubby ordered the 'goreng' version and I ordered with 'kuah' (the cooking style is Malay frying with heavy soup gravy. Both tasted good though the 'goreng' version tasted like our local Indian mee. Done with that, the highlight of the day came ! Mantis prawn or 'hei kor' - fresh from the sea -yummy and juicy !!! Had two in total.

Done with lunch, it is time for us to leave for Penang. On our way to the jetty, we bought some buah sukun (fried) and gave it a try. Tasted like fried yam. Quite nice too :)

All in all, we had fun though it was a half day trip. It has always been good when it comes to seafood - but watch out for the cholesterol !
