Experiencing Georgetown City

Journal Entry 237

I simply loved Penang ! It amazes every tourist that steps into this lovely city. The city has everything , from feasting on yummy hawker street food to soaking/basking in the sun at one of the many beaches. If that is not enough, one can continue to explore the quaint streets of Penang while enjoying the uniqueness of this beautiful island !

As a Penangite myself, we took the chance to live life as a local as well. So, we did what other tourist did - booked ourselves a night at one of the boutique heritage hotels. We tried out Noordin Mews, a shop house turned to boutique hotel with a class of it's own.
We had trouble locating it initially as we can't find the entrance. I was expecting a grand entrance (silly me) but it was actually located in a quiet street in the middle of the city !

On entering the building, our walk down memory lane begins. The wooden doors open immediately to a reception area reminiscent of a Nonya sitting area with amazing staff. Walking in further reveals a dining area that serves breakfast and a courtyard that houses a rectangular, medium-sized pool. Surrounding it is the hotel's suites and standard rooms located on the 2nd floor. Despite a heritage building, this place still exudes a modern, minimalistic feel that is very inviting to the guest.

We were then guided to our room and the rooms were thoughtfully and beautifully laid out. It is equipped with large bathroom and are spacious with built in beds. Also, it came with armchairs, an antique dressing table, Wi-Fi and are air conditioned too !!

Yep, that is our room number alphabet

We got our welcome fruits & drinks (cooling nutmegs) and it was indeed refreshing when it comes to the hot weather in Penang. Explored the place a lil before we set off for a movie at 1st Avenue.

I found a red Vespa !!

It was around evening when we came back to the hotel. It was a lil bit too late to take a dip in the pool. So, we went for dinner instead. Two doors down the lane was another heritage boutique hotel called Noordin Street House. We decided to try out their café Noor & Dean's which serves Asian fusion delights. A different twist for the night. Quite tasty too but quite pricey.

We spent about an hour there before we walked back to the hotel to rest. Guess what we got when we came back ? The hotel staff were really sweet & gave us some local goodies to take back and for the little boy, he got a Minion colouring book and a set of colouring pencils. Loved the element of surprise here !!

Cow Ear Biscuit - old time fav !

We called it a night after having a bowl of hokkien-mee at 3-Tiau Lor.

Morning came and it was time for breakfast. It was included as part of our stay and served all fresco by the pool. There is a variety of both Asian and Western menu. To reach the pool, we have to go thru the living area & library. It consists of a spacious seating area thoughtfully designed with antique suitcases, painted vases and floor tiles in colonial style.

We opted for Western cos Matt loves egg. The servings was quite a lot and we were very full when we finished it. Hahaha !! With breakfast done, we took some photos here n there before we balik.

Well, I would certainly recommend this quaint small hotel if you were to ask me. Authentic, simple, rustic décor that brings you down memory lane. This is definitely a place to  go to for a relaxing weekend stay !! It works for me, so I am sure it will do the same for you too :):)
