An Awesome & Happening May - Pt. 1 - Bali ~The Goddest Island

Journal Entry 119

All work and no play makes Jack a dull boy. This is a true saying & well said.

It is our usual time of the yr for our annual getaway & holiday trips. We had been lucky this yr as Willie had been very kind to arrange for some pre holiday bookings late last yr. Flight tickets checked & hotel bookings made easy with Willie's help.

It was definitely a good one week off from work :)

The destination ~ Bali - the well known paradise of Asia - the famed Island of the Gods.

A land of great spa and a haven for small time surfers !

Day 1

It was a 3hrs flight from Penang to Denpasar Airport(the main airport hub for Bali). We arrived at about 7pm and checked in to Tune Hotels (as it is near Kuta town). Great value @ a great place. As it approaches dusk, we decided to walk down the town to check a few hot spots. Savoured some local delights for dinner and called it a night.

Day 2

Checked out from Tune and proceed with island touring. We travelled the island from South to North (from Kuta to Ubud). Our first stop was Tanah Lot - known as the 'Sea Temple of the Earth' - a coastal temple in South Bali. The crowd was lesser in the morning and quick snapshots was taken on the spot. We proceed to Nuri's for a sumptous pork rib lunch before the ride to Pura Luhur temple at Uluwatu.

Tanah Lot

ULUWATU

The temple is set on a cliff overlooking a stunning view of the Indian ocean. No doubt the view is breathtaking, but the major pullback of this place would be the monkeys - these monkeys will be the most mischevious & cheeky creatures you have ever met and if you have any glasses on - A WORD OF CAUTION - pls do take them off before you enter the temple.

With Uluwatu being the 2nd destination - we proceed to Jimbaran for dinner. It was a 2 1/2 hrs ride from Uluwatu. Jimbaran is located in the South of Bali and is well known for it's seafood restaurants. Tables are set right up on the sand and tourist can enjoy their view of sunset while enjoying their food. The whole area will be lit with oil torches after dark. Some view as below

Jimbaran

We then proceed for a long journey up north to Ubud -the small town has been made famous with the best selling novel 'Eat Pray Love' by Elizabeth Gilbert. It is located amongst rice paddies with steep ravines and is well known for it's culture and art centre. Reached Ubud at 8.30pm and checked in to Tegal Sari Resort -amisdt a widespread of paddy fields.

The hotels that we stayed in Bali.

and not forgetting the scrumptious food that we had at Kuta & Jimbaran

Day 3

Free and easy mode activated for that day. As Ubud is a small town, we took our time and went for a stroll to the Ubud morning market. As we go along, we came to Ubud Monkey Forest. We passed that and went straight for a shopping spree. Had some rest and proceed to savour the well known 'Babi Guling Ibu Okra' followed by a good spa treatment. Night came and next on the list - Balinese dirty duck or known as 'Bebek Bengil'. I must say that it was made in a pretty unique way. We called it a nite with some pizza - yummy :):)

Babi Guling & Dirty duck

Day 4

It's time to travel down south again to Kuta town.

We first stop by the Ubud Rice Terrace at Tengalalang - the well known paddy rice. Locals greeted us with their local handicrafts when we came out from our van.

Everyone will definitely love the calm and serene atmosphere surrounding the rice terrace.

Took some photos and we proceed to view Mount Agung before lunch. The stratovolcano is the highest point in Bali and is still currently active. with the buffet lunch, I must say that it was pretty disappointing though. It was really bad :(

Mt Agung & Ubud Rice Terrace

We continued our journey and visited two temples on our way down. 1st stop -Puru Tirtha Empul -a Hindu temple in the middle of Bali and is famous for it's Holy Water for purification. We then ended up at Taman Ayun Royal Temple which we took a few photos before we leave the place.

Proceed to check in to Rama Beach Hotel where we stayed for 2 nites. Again - ala Balinese style

Day 6

Last day to explore Bali. We visited Kuta beach this time and both Willie and Alex had a great time at the beach. Bali is a place for small time surfers and definitely, there were huge crowd of 'ang mor'. It is definitely cheaper to surf in Bali compared to Australia. Both boys had their share of the huge wave and soak themselves the whole afternoon.

Called it a day and dinner was pizza. We did some last minute shopping before going back to the hotel to pack.

All in all, the trip to Bali has been pretty relaxing. Well, I have read articles that it is the MUST see island before you die - for me -my say is - it is definitely a beautiful island but nothing beats Penang :)
